Seed
If you’re in the mood for vegan comfort food, Seed is the ideal restaurant. Located on a quiet block, Seed is the vegan contemporary restaurant of your dreams. Here you can indulge in po’boys, wings, massive sandwiches and more. You can also enjoy a delicious vegan brunch with your friends on the weekends here. The restaurant has a light and airy feel to it, and the walls are decorated with whimsical quotes that you’ll find yourself reading while waiting for your order. My favorite quote was “goodness is the only investment that never fails.”
As a starter I ordered the chips and fresh house-made dips and an antioxidant boost drink to go with it. The chips and dips consisted of roasted corn salsa, cashew queso, guacamole, and corn chips. The salsa took me by surprise with how great it tasted. I found myself trying to fit as much as I could on one chip so that I could enjoy the salsa to the fullest. There was no time to take it slow and savor the meal. I needed it all and I needed it now. The guacamole was delicious, of course. The guac was a chunky little thing, so much so that it kept breaking the chips. I had to use two at a time to scoop. Despite the fact that the cashew queso was just as enjoyable as the other dips, it unfortunately did not get much love from me. I was too busy focusing on the guac and salsa. However, I did save the queso to put on my entree.
This may have been all in my mind, but as soon as I took the first sip of the drink I instantly felt revitalized. This powerful drink consisted of beet, blueberry, Granny Smith apple, and celery. The celery overpowered every other flavor in the drink, but I didn't mind because celery has so many nutritional value that I was ready to consume. In addition to fresh blended juices, Seed also has smoothies and fresh juice cocktails.
Being in New Orleans for the first time, I thought it was only right that I tried the Southern Fried Po’Boy. This massive sandwich was filled with large pieces of fried tofu, lettuce, tomato, vegan mayo, and the cashew queso I saved from earlier. I stared at the sandwich for a few seconds trying to figure out where to start. I came to the conclusion that there was no “trying to look cute” while eating this. I had to just dive right in. So I picked up the sandwich, mushed it together to lessen the width, and I just started eating. I personally wish the bread was a lot softer, so as to lessen the energy I had to exert to chew the food.
The special that day was red beans and rice with vegan sausages. This dish was well seasoned and had a subtle spiciness to it. It tasted just like a home cooked meal. The red beans and rice reminded me of the stew peas and rice my mom would cook ever so often, minus all the veggies and dumplings she usually adds.
From this visit, I can tell that Seed is all about providing fresh, healthy, and quality vegan dishes to the area of New Orleans. Their goal is to spread the benefits of sustainable living while providing delicious cuisines to the community.
